Burial at sea- Types and Pre-Requirement


In ancient times there was the practice of burial at sea was taking place. But the history has recalled for those who have a love for the sea. When we decide to dispose of remains after a cremation or full human dead body in the ocean then it is called burial at sea. It is done from a ship or boat. In Singapore Burial at sea can be done at sight designed by the National Environmental Agency. The site is located about 2.8km south of Pulau Semakau, off southern Singapore. The only small amount of ash can be scattered at this place.


Types of burial at sea

Burial at sea can be in two ways. These ways are to burial the whole body or the remaining after cremation. 
 Full Body Burial at Sea
It is possible to burial the full body at sea. But there are many things to consider when doing so. This practice required special skills, that’s why the bereaved family hire an expert team or company to execute this processor. 
Full body burial is mostly required for the people who died in the sea while executing any operation or died because of any other reason. When it is not possible to bring the body for burial or cremation at land, then the last option in Singapore burial at sea.

Scattering Ashes at Sea

The second thing comes to scatter ashes of remaining after cremation at sea. The funeral homes also provide the service of the sea at burial to their clients. The Maritime Port Authority (MPA) in Singapore is responsible to design the site for scattering ashes.

There are two options available for family  for scattering ashes at sea

Option A:
  • The family can participate when the ashes transfer at Mandai Crematorium's Ash Collection Centre
  • Or can travel to the ferry terminal on a boat with a family member
Option B:
  • The funeral home does all the activities like collecting the ashes from the cremation spot 
  • Take it to scattering place on behalf of the family
Things to be considered during a burial at sea
The National Environmental Agency has decided some restrictions for burial at sea as the safeguard of the sea environment. Everyone must have to follow these restrictions to deliver in Singapore burial at sea.

  • All materials used in the process of burial at sea must be biodegradable such as urn, casket or anything else required as per religious customs.
  • Burial at sea is not allowed for animals.
  • As per some states rule, the body should be weighted
  • Medical waste which is harmful to seawater should not mix up with remains.
  •  Depth requirement in waters at least 600 feet deep 

In Singapore Burial at sea is preferred by most of the families because the land is running out. So, the family must know and follow the National Environment Agency’s instruction and all legal processors for the execution of the burial at the sea.
